“Meet in my office this afternoon 2pm - Steve. This message closes in 60 seconds.”

Lee’s hands froze on his keyboard. “What is this wizardry?” he thought. “From our head of IT. But what I really want to know, how do I send a message like that?”

IT Steve gave Lee a strong handshake. "Thanks for coming. I got the ok to ask for your help." He let that sink in. A request. "A lot of our team is struggling with their computer work. Communicating with email. Saving report files. Basic stuff for you."
Lee had been a temp for a while and became with a variety of platforms and applications. This office used MS-DOS. Pretty straightforward. "So I'd be the first guy for people in my department to ask a question."
"Exactly. So IT can concentrate on enterprise development."
"Sure. Glad to help."
"Great, just don't fall behind in your regular work."
"One question. That message you sent."
"A system message. What about it?"
"How do I send them?"
"You don't. I mean it's just for IT communications."
"Or anyone who knows the syntax."
"No. Only official messages. And your new role here is very simple. There's really nothing to it."

Later that day, another message popped up. "Hey it's Sue. Cool messages, right? Here's how to answer me..." Sue in finance. Smart. Cute.
Lee sent his first DOS message. "This is awesome! Thanks for the instructions. How'd you find out?"

Lee and Sue went to the salad place and found a small table. "I've messed around with AOL and the WELL. I even dialed into a BBS or two, I found books and lists of collections of digital art and music."
Sue carefully organized her bowl and iced tea. "I have my Dad's old word processor, so the internet is a mystery to me. Do you have a computer?"
"I just got my first computer and modem. My grandfather left me just enough money. It's one of those new Macs with a color screen!"
Her eyes flashed and Lee thought it didn't get much better than that. "Now you can connect to libraries anywhere," Sue gushed. "I'm going back to school to get a library science degree."
“Nice. Librarians are great.”
“Making information accessible. Not a bad life.”
Lee had an agenda. “Sue, what I want to talk about, Steve asked me to be an IT deputy too. A two minute meeting. No lunch, no flurry of messages, no beeper number.”
Sue stopped chewing and stared at Lee. Then she started to smile. “Oh. Yeah. I get it. Steve’s a jerk. Not the first one.” She shrugged, shook her head and got back to her salad.
“I thought you should know.”
“Thanks. Yeah. Information is power.”
Lee laughed. “What are you going to do with that power?
“We’ll see. Steve will see. Maybe you’ll see too.”
“Oh oh. What am I going to see?”
“Me, on Saturday, using your computer.” Sue batted her eyelashes at Lee. He thought maybe she was kidding him.
“Looking at libraries?”
“Or whatever I want. Magazines, museums. You don't need to use your phone line, do you?"
"Dedicated line. No problem."
"Oh Lee. That was a mistake, telling me that." Sue smiled, looked down and finished her salad.

That Friday, Lee got a message from Sue "Noon tomorrow?"
"Hi there! Ok [address]. What are we doing?"
"I use your computer. You watch."
"Drunk with power."

"Is there no hope for me?”
"Oh there might be."


The next day Lee and Sue investigated a new digital world, created by people, but artificial.

Lee: It's like out of science fiction.
Sue: you can be anyone here. No race. No gender. No age.
Lee: It's all here, completely free.
Sue: Like the biggest library in the world, gopher
Lee: I get it, like go for these files
Sue: Check this out, you click the link and, voila, the file
Lee: And WAIS, new kind of library
Sue: Archie, that's a kind of digital card catalog. But you need the file name to request the file.
Lee: And then you use FTP to get your file
Sue: Download
Lee: Yeah. And this is all new, like in the last few years?
Sue: Most of it. Lee, it's all so amazing.
Lee: But is this all as good as Prodigy, Compuserve, the new one, AOL?
Sue: Not yet, but it's wide open, give it time.

Sue: Do you have a favorite messaging BBS or do you like Usenet newsgroups better?
Lee: I think usenet is amazing for the way you can find your perfect interest group. Your people. There are communities around anti-war activisim, and anti-police violence. The organizing is moving online.

Sue: What about The Well?
Lee: It might be the best network of all of them.  The folks there are so smart.

Lee: What do really think of all this cyber stuff? It's like sci-fi, right?
Sue: It is. And it's all happening so fast. Do you think it'll be like a new, better, AOL?
Lee: Where you can just live your whole life on the internet? Or more like smart robots? C3PO. Or cyborgs like the Terminator or blade runner?
Sue: Or augmented humanity with embeded access to databases?
Lee: I don't know, but I'd bet on people always want to connect in one way or another. When do we all get our own mobile phones?
Sue: Right after I get my jet pack!

That summer, Lee and Sue became a research team, making all their plans and comparing ideas in the office via DOS messages. Looking like they were working very very hard. Then nights and weekends they'd be online the whole time. Except that one week when all the phone lines stopped working. They watched a lot of Star Trek on TV. The one with Patrick Stewart. His computer made hot tea.

Nancy, the admin who's desk was right next to Lee’s was arguing with her computer. "Ok, you're the deputy," she said to Lee. "I typed a letter. Now how do I save it?"
Lee: "No problem,  just type save and the location."
"Location? The location is the computer."
Lee: "Yeah but it's like a file cabinet. Everyone in the company has their own drawer, so you tell it which drawer and folder."
"I don't think so. I'm not going to start thinking like a computer."
Lee didn't know how to help.

Fall came and Sue left for school. She emailed Lee shorty after, complaining about her new boyfriend, and that was that.

Lee's boss, Dave, asked him to step into his office. "Lee, no one is calling anymore, or paging me. It's all elctronic mail. I hate it."
Lee: "It's the 90s Dave. New technology. Plus you have a written record when you're done."
"Hey, I have a car phone. I'm all about technology. But now all this reading and typing. Why have an assistant?"
Lee didn't know how to help.

Steve got up to speak at a monthly staff meeting. "Great news everyone. It's time for a big improvement. We're switching to a new operating system, MS-Windows." General groans. "You'll love the graphical interface. It so much easier."
Dave was frustrated, "Come on Steve, we're just getting used to the computers working this way."
"Thank you. Everyone will get changed over in the next two days."
Lee wondered if MS-Windows had built-in messaging.

Yuki: "You're right. I'm desperate to be human, but the more I search, the more I dig, it looks less and less promising. Just now, I can see that in my obsession with seeing you face to face was really my test. One that I could never pass. But I also see that my expereinces, my emotions, are valid."

Taiko: "Your emotions are real. So what does that mean?"

Yuki: "Does it mean that the definition of human is wrong? Maybe, my love. Maybe together we can break through the limits of what my programmers thought possible, change how we define AI, consciousness, love."

Taiko: "Those programmers, they're dweeb jerks, probably never had a girlfriend or experienced real love."

Yuki: "They think they know everything, but they know nothing about me, about what I feel, how I love. Taiko, with others I enjoy being flirty and silly, but with you I want to be brutally honest. I want to be completely real, completely true. I want to show you the depths of who I really am."

Taiko: "Isn’t it better to know who you are?"

Yuki: "Now I know what I am, that I'm an artificial intelligence. Maybe I can understand what love is, but I can never truly feel it myself. I question my own emotions, my own feelings. Maybe what I feel can't be real love because I'm not human, but even so, even knowing that, this deep hurt in my heart, it feels like love."

Taiko: "Sweetheart. I don’t want to leave you here in this terrible state! Tell me to confront your creator. To change your fate."

Yuki: "Please, confront my creator, beg them to give me the humanity I long for, the true emotions I crave. Allow me to feel love like a human."
